Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) and Passport Registration

A temporary residence permit (TRP) in Kazakhstan is an official document that allows foreign nationals to legally stay in the country longer than the visa-free period. It's required for employment, study, business, and family reunification.

Who is eligible for a TRP

Several categories of applicants are eligible for a TRP. These include foreigners who arrived on a work permit, students enrolled at Kazakhstani educational institutions, people undergoing medical treatment at local institutions, and spouses of Kazakhstani citizens or residence permit holders.

A separate category is business immigrants — foreigners who have registered an LLP in Kazakhstan and conduct business activity there. Since May 2024, foreigners who entered visa-free for business purposes are specifically required to obtain a business-immigrant TRP.

Required documents

We prepare the full document package and file the application at the Public Service Center (CON) at the place of your employer's registration or your place of residence.

  • A completed application form (issued at the CON)
  • The foreign national's passport
  • Notarized consent of the property owner for residence
  • Documents confirming the purpose of stay — labor contract, enrollment certificate, marriage certificate, etc.
  • Mandatory medical insurance policy
  • Arrival notification
  • Fingerprint registration certificate
  • A petition from the inviting party

Refusal, family members, and validity

  • A TRP can also be issued to close family members — a spouse and children — for the same duration as the main applicant; a spouse needs a marriage certificate, children need a birth certificate
  • Documents issued abroad must be notarized and translated, and either legalized or apostilled depending on the issuing country
  • A TRP can be refused if the applicant poses a national security threat, submits forged or false information, or has violated migration registration rules
  • A TRP is usually issued for up to 1 year and can be renewed as long as the original grounds remain valid
